Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello divulged plans yesterday for overcoming the team's salary cap crunch, and they include Gomez. Surprisingly, they also include defenseman Vladimir Malakhov returning from retirement.
That drops the Devils current cap figure to the $44 million limit, of which $7.1 million is due to Malakhov ($3.6 million) and Alexander Mogilny ($3.5 million).
A few months ago, neither player figured in the Devils' plans for 2006-07, since Mogilny was demoted to the minors last season and Malakhov left the club in December and was considered retired. But that has changed.
Lamoriello said he expects Mogilny to compete for a job in training camp and he has apparently talked Malakhov into coming back and reporting to training camp.
If both stick with the Devils, that would be two fewer salaries that would have to be shoehorned under the cap.
Notes: Malakhov left the Devils after their Dec. 17, 2005 game in Carolina. He was suspended on Dec. 19 and considered retired (either willingly or unwillingly, depending upon the source) by the Devils.
